Pedaling Forward: Unpacking the challenges of Public Bicycle Sharing in Indian cities

As part of the TUL Foundation webinar series on sustainable mobility, we hosted webinar “Pedaling Forward: Unpacking the challenges of Public Bicycle Sharing in Indian cities” to discuss the challenges and opportunities of Public Bicycle Sharing (PBS) in Indian cities on December 20, 2024. The discussion brought together experts, funders and operators to analyse real world examples, identify challenges, and explore strategies to make PBS viable across diverse urban context.

Outcomes

  • Discussed user adoption barriers, including affordability, safety, last-mile connectivity etc. 
  • Highlighted the need for its integration with public transit modes and network and enabling policy frameworks for longer term
  • Addressed operational, financial and institutional challenges in maintaining and scaling up the system from operator’s perspective 
  • Examined business models, funding mechanisms and public-private partnerships to support the system in the long term

Impacts

  • Initiated dialogue among stakeholders on improving PBS systems in cities
  • Identified actionable lessons for cities to plan and design inclusive, efficient and resilient system
  • Strengthened the understanding about having PBS as an important part of planning sustainable mobility for the cities
  • Enabled platform for stakeholders to share lessons learnt, challenges and innovations in PBS planning and implementation
